Online Desktop Presenter – Let Others See Your Desktop
If you need to help out a friend in need who can’t troubleshoot his computer on his own, you need to use a software application that allows you to remotely take control of your friend’s machine. The names Atelier Web Remote Commander and Netman come to mind. With Netman for example you can remotely turn on your friend’s computer, turn it off, turn on the webcam, upload and download local files, and pretty much work as if you were right there, in front of your friend’s computer.
What if you need to do the opposite? What if instead is seeing a friend’s desktop, you need to show a friend your desktop. Once again, software can save the day.
To be more precise, you need to use an Infonautics GmbH-developed application called Online Desktop Presenter. This software application that weighs in at little over 1MB (archived version) allows you to share your Windows desktop via the internet with any computer user that also has access to the internet. Or you can share your Windows desktop with another computer user on your Intranet or local network.
The whole thing goes something like this. Whatever is displayed on your Windows is grabbed by Online Desktop Presenter and uploaded via FTP to the web or to your own server. This is done automatically and continuously. The person that wants to view your desktop only needs to fire up his browser, access a link, and watch. It is a simple s that. There’s no need for that person to install anything.
If you do not want to share everything that’s displayed on your screen, Online Desktop Presenter lets you select only a portion and share that portion.
The functionality provided by Online Desktop Presenter does not come free of charge. If you don’t feel like spending money, you can use the demo version, but be warned that it is limited. There’s a nag screen, the transmission is stopped after 100 frames or 5 minutes, and there’s a watermark on the output.
